We have summarised all the biggest talking points from one of the most anticipated documentaries of the year, particularly for food lovers.
What is Rise of the Rockstar Chef about?
Rise of the Rockstar Chef is a three-part BBC Two series charting how Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal's ambition, rivalry and pursuit of Michelin stars transformed British fine dining in the 1990s and 2000s.
For the full background, contributors and episode guide, read our Rise of the Rockstar Chef explainer.
What was episode one about?
Episode one focuses heavily on Marco's rise to becoming one of the most important British chefs in history. The show highlights how Harvey's became one of the top restaurants in London in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and how young and talented chefs were desperate to work for Marco.
One of those chefs in particular was Gordon, who became a crucial part of the early Harvey's years working under Marco. A lot of the episode focuses on their relationship too, and shows Gordon at Chez Bruce, the restaurant that now exists where Harvey's was. Gordon shows the space and brings to life a lot of what is being discussed, as well as describing the pair's relationship.
Heston also featured in the first episode, but the primary focus was on Marco. His story looks set to come to the fore in episode two, which the BBC says will see him rewrite the rules at The Fat Duck.
Did we see the trio talking?
Not yet. The episode heavily teased that Marco, Gordon and Heston would be in a room together to get to the bottom of a lot of unresolved issues. The episode began and ended with a teaser that this was coming very soon.
However, so far, through episode one, there is no conversation between the trio in one room.
What did we learn?
Here's what we learned:
Heston says Marco asked him to kick Gordon out of The Fat Duck
The show opens with a bang. In a story Marco reckons dates back nearly 30 years, Gordon described the "really hurtful" moment he was asked to leave The Fat Duck.
Heston said: "This is my version of what happened. It was a Sunday lunch. I was in the kitchen, and I heard 'Hello Heston'. Standing on the other side of the pass was Gordon. The trouble is, I booked a table for Marco. I'd heard they weren't on the best of terms. 'Marco's asked me to ask you to leave.'"
Gordon said: "How sad of you to ask me to leave a restaurant that's not even yours."
Marco said: "I don't remember."
Exciting stuff, and that's just the intro. We'll have to wait for the final episode, when the three of them sit down together, to find out whether it's ever resolved.

Heston and Marco worked together under Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir
Marco said of Raymond: "He was very talented, very special. An amazing saucier. I learnt a lot from him."
Heston said: "That's where I met Marco actually. I was working on a section, and some French chef walked past me, elbowed me and said something to me, so I said something back to him. And then I heard this voice saying, 'Don't do what you're doing over there, come over here,' so I changed sections. And that's how we met."
Marco added: “And so he did the sauce section with me. He was there to stage. Must have been there three weeks. And in that three-week period, we became very close.”
Recalling that time, Heston said of Marco: “He’s a prankster! He cut my apron off at the back – the apron fell open!”
Gordon's interview at Harvey's
When Gordon came in for an interview with Marco at Harvey's, he got the full Marco experience straight away. After an intense tasting session in which they shared a spoon, Marco took Gordon outside.
Gordon said: "He took me back out. 'When can you start?' 'Well, I've got to hand my notice in, it's going to take a month.' 'No. If you want the job, you start on Monday.'
"So I made up a shitty excuse that I was ill, and I started at Marco's. Stepping into Harvey's was the biggest turning point in my culinary career. There's no doubt. That was it. I was in the fast lane, and there was no fucking way I was getting out."

Marco would drop through the skylight to get back into the kitchen
One great titbit from the first episode came when Gordon revealed that whenever Marco was upstairs, rather than walk back through the restaurant, he would get straight into the kitchen through the skylight.
Gordon said: "He would jump out of the fucking toilet, and then just hang from the skylight and drop down into the kitchen!"
The cult of Harvey's
Gordon had an interesting way of describing Harvey's. Marco's work has been hailed as a revolution in British cooking, and while Gordon agreed, he had another word for it too.
Gordon said: "He treated that restaurant like it was his home, and we were all siblings. When someone shows you that kind of care and nurturing, you trust them. You trust them with everything. I handed myself over to him. So in many ways it was like a cult, over a revolution."
Marco's iconic photo
One of the most iconic photos in British cooking is the famous shot of Marco holding a cleaver. Apparently the photographer, Bob Carlos Clarke, wanted Marco to show pain. Marco said he couldn't fake it, so he made a suggestion.
Marco said: "Why don't I go for a run? I'll run two, three miles, and I'll come back. I'll be in pain, I'll be sweating. And I walked through, and that was the first shot."
Marco and Gordon's friendship (and fishing)
One of the highlights of the first episode was the reverence and fondness Marco and Gordon showed each other at times. Gordon told the story of how they would go out trying to catch two 50lb carp by Wandsworth Common.
Gordon said: "And all that time we spent out here... we caught nothing. He just wanted companionship, he just wanted a friend, he just wanted to talk."
The episode then showed Marco watching a video of himself and Gordon fishing on another occasion.
Marco said: "It's nice to listen to Gordon laugh. He's a very good man. When you spend six days a week with somebody, 18 hours a day, you can't help but build a bond. Remember, Gordon and I go back 40 years. That's a lot of life.
"It's rather beautiful watching the two of us together. It's a very affectionate moment."
The fallout
The following episodes are sure to cover the fallout between Gordon and Marco, and the end of the episode teased the famous moment Marco made Gordon cry during his last service at Harvey's, before he left for Le Gavroche.
Gordon said: "I thought I was a friend until you get absolutely destroyed, and then you try to work out what kind of relationship you have with him. He muddied the waters. He got you so close that you couldn't have a voice, but then you're too close and it's too dangerous."
When is the next episode of Rise of the Rockstar Chef on?
Episode two airs on BBC Two on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 9pm, and is also be available on BBC iPlayer.
The BBC says episode two sees Marco chase three Michelin stars, Gordon break away to make his own name and Heston rewrite the rules at The Fat Duck, as success brings fame and a whole new kind of pressure.
The third and final episode brings Marco, Gordon and Heston together for the first time in decades, to find out whether time has healed old wounds or whether the rivalries are still very much alive. It is expected to air on Thursday, November 19, 2026.
