The Star at Harome claims top spot in Top 50 Gastro Pubs 2017

Andrew Pern's The Star at Harome in Yorkshire, which holds a star in the Michelin Guide UK 2017, was named best gastropub in the UK at the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub Awards.

The full list was announced at an awards ceremony hosted by TV celebrity chef, Matt Tebutt at the Hermitage Road Bar and Restaurant in Hertfordshire on Monday, January 30.

The award winning gastro pub has crept up the list in recent years going from third place last year to claim the top spot in 2017. Last year's winner, the Sportsman in Kent drops to second place whilst former Great British Menu contestant, Josh Eggleton and his Bristol pub, The Pony and Trap rises two places to number three. Freemasons at Wiswell goes from sixth to fourth place and last year's highest new entry, The Coach in Marlow from Tom Kerridge drops one place to round off the top five.

Elsewhere, Fulham's Harwood Arms rises one place to number six, Dom Chapman's Waltham pub, The Beehive enters this year's top 10 at number seven, The Butcher's Arms in Gloucestershire is at number eight, the Michelin-starred Pipe & Glass Inn falls seven places to number nine and Simon Bonwick’s pub, the Crown in Maidenhead rounds off the top 10.

There were 24 new entries in this year's list which includes Michelin-starred chef, Daniel Clifford's Little Dunmow gastro pub, The Flitch of Bacon which breaks the top 20 coming in at number 16.

Chef patron, Rob Taylor from The Compasses Inn was named Gastropub Chef of the Year and The Swann Inn, Chiddingfold took home the title of Newcomer of the Year, while The Treby Arms in Devon won Front of House Team of the Year.

The Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub Awards are voted for by top foodies and hospitality experts including gastropub operators, food writers, pubco catering development managers and executive chefs, celebrity and top hospitality industry chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators.
