Farm Africa’s Chefs for Change movement calls on diners to Dine for Good

This autumn, Farm Africa, the official charity partner to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, is calling on restaurants to invite their diners to make small donations to help African farmers grow themselves out of poverty.

Farm Africa’s Chefs for Change movement works in partnership with some of the world’s best chefs to transform the lives of small-scale food producers through sustainable farming. The movement was launched in 2018 by leading chefs Joan Roca, Eneko Atxa and Gaggan Anand.

The movement’s ‘Dine for Good’ initiative is simple, effective and offers the opportunity for chefs and restaurants to demonstrate a clear commitment to global food sustainability. It is simple to set up, easy to manage, and has the potential to transform lives.

• The donation comes from diners, so there is no cost to the restaurant
• Some of the world’s best restaurants are already taking part – you’ll be in good company!
• We’ll provide you with everything you need; tent cards, set-up advice and support throughout the campaign
Gifts will support the Farm Africa’s work helping farmers grow more, grow better and sell for more. Just £1 could buy 1kg of seeds for drought-tolerant crops, helping farmers reap a healthy harvest, whatever the weather.

Ashley Palmer-Watts, Chef Director at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and Farm Africa Ambassador, commented:
“I’ve supported Farm Africa for a number of years and I have seen first-hand how the funds raised have impacted local communities in eastern Africa. Dine for Good is a simple and effective way for the restaurant industry to give back.”

Joan Roca, chef at El Celler de Can Roca, one of the founding chefs of the Chefs for Change movement, added:
“A dish is much more than the sum of its ingredients. If we consider its sourcing, we see that every ingredient has been created by a varied cast of human characters involved in every step of the food’s journey from land to the plate. The Chefs for Change movement wants to give a voice to these rural food producers and their life stories, and empower them to grow.”

This spring, three Chefs for Change ambassadors saw for themselves the impact that Farm Africa’s work is having on small-scale food producers living in eastern Africa.

Andoni Luis Aduriz and Gaggan Anand visited farmers working with Farm Africa to increase their incomes by growing and selling rice and drought-tolerant varieties of sunflowers in Tanzania.

Luke Dale Roberts travelled to Kenya to meet fish farmers receiving support from Farm Africa to develop successful businesses sustainably rearing catfish and tilapia.
