Gary Adopts a School

Gary Kilminster, one of our Business Development Executives, attended the hospital school in Barnstaple on Thursday 22nd September to assist in the Adopt a School programme.

Essential Cuisine have been strong supporters of the programme for some time, which sees chefs ‘teach children in a holistic way - about food, cookery, food provenance, food growing, healthy eating, nutrition, hygiene, table etiquette and the importance of eating together.’

Gary’s session involved him working with pupils from year 1 to 11 and was pitched perfectly as it was able to reach all ages. He taught the pupils the importance of preparing and cooking food whilst allowing them to get fully involved by organising activities enabling them to join in on the process. All pupils massively enjoyed the experience and Gary even managed to convert an adamant cous cous and feta cheese hater into a fan!

The session was particularly beneficial for two boys who unfortunately were too unwell to attend the schoolroom alongside the others. Having a fun, practical activity to do whilst confined to their beds, was a real boost for them. Gary found the experience extremely rewarding and said ‘the students and I had a great time and it was great to see some poorly children smile and laugh in what is a hard time for them.’ We are very proud of Gary’s involvement in the programme and are delighted he was able to bring such enjoyment to the children who took part in his session.

The Adopt a School programme is a fantastic way to not only teach children about food but allow them to experiment through taste and sensory activities. It is an effective, informative and fun programme that we believe will continue for some time.

Small Contribution. Big Impact.

The Staff Canteen has always been more than a website—it’s a community, built by and for hospitality. We share the wins, the challenges, the graft, and the inspiration that keeps kitchens alive.

We believe in staying open to everyone, but creating this content takes real resources. If you’ve ever found value here—whether it’s a recipe, an interview, or a laugh when you needed it most—consider giving just £3 to keep it going.

A little from you keeps this space free for all. Let’s keep lifting the industry, together.
