The Burnt Chef Project have teamed up with Doctors from Bournemouth University and Le Cordon Bleu London to explore the relationship between Emotional Labour and Employee Burnout at work, focused on front-line employees in UK’s fine dining restaurants.

Emotional labour is the process of managing feelings and expressions to fulfill the emotional requirements of a job. More specifically, workers are expected to regulate their emotions during interactions with customers, co-workers, and superiors. Burnout strikes employees when they have exhausted their physical or emotional strength, with multiple negative effects on employees and restaurants respectively.

This survey is completely anonymous and will take 10-15 minutes to complete. This research does not require you to provide personal data.

Small Contribution. Big Impact.

The Staff Canteen has always been more than a website—it’s a community, built by and for hospitality. We share the wins, the challenges, the graft, and the inspiration that keeps kitchens alive.

We believe in staying open to everyone, but creating this content takes real resources. If you’ve ever found value here—whether it’s a recipe, an interview, or a laugh when you needed it most—consider giving just £3 to keep it going.

A little from you keeps this space free for all. Let’s keep lifting the industry, together.
