Chef Career Advice

Based on his extensive experience working within Food Industry, Culinary Director, David Mulcahy offers his advice to aspiring Chefs in an attempt to help them on their journey up the career ladder:

Hi my name is David Mulcahy, and I'm a culinary director Sodexo UK and Ireland, but today's industry is probably never been better to become a Chef and the advice I'd give is to make sure that it's a career that you find out as much about as possible, for you begin on the road though the young Chef.

Today I guess can expect to an awful lot, I think it's never been a better industry to be part of a career these days looks quite different because there are lots more opportunities. There’s a lot of good marketing that's going on about how to become part of the wider industry, it's not just hotels and restaurants there’s a huge area for other Chefs to become involved in including food service contract catering and right across the gambit.

The best bit of careers advice that I've been given is to make sure that the training you get to begin with is strong the foundations are important and I do think that when you're young you don't necessarily understand what that means, but later in life you know that it counts for a lot.

Anybody applying to become a Chef or to get into the foodservice side of the business I will certainly look for somebody who's genuinely keen to be involved, they're not looking at it as a while I'm waiting to make another career decision, it's what they want that needs to come across, I think if people are passionately they will do, curiosity think they need to be curious about what's in it for them and they need to be asking the right questions as well it is their career.

With Sodexo today a Chef can expect a good level of training we I certainly am responsible for the Chef training in the company it's a very varied industry to be in and very varied company to be in we're in over 70 countries across-world so the world's your oyster.
