Chef Career Advice

Based on his extensive experience working within Culinary Industry, Michelin Star Chef, Nigel Haworth offers his advice to aspiring Chefs in an attempt to help them on their journey up the career ladder:

I suppose my advice would be two-fold, if your able to go and know a good restaurant that offers you a good apprenticeship scheme, I would go that route I think that an apprenticeship scheme is one of the best ways to solidly learn and have a good quality platform I think the industry is a never changing industry and I think what you should expect is very high standards in the UK.

Now even if you are in a mid-range restaurant the basics should be done well if you are going into a pub, a gastro pub you have got to be enthusiastic about doing the numbers certainly if you work for me.

The best bit of career advice I think would be when I was 15 and my PE teacher said to me Nigel, you're not going to make it as a footballer, so you better get stuck into something else and I think that's when catering took over. What am I looking for when a Chef applies at Northcote it's not the norm so I look at the character and the personality of the person and every time it's different.

A Chef can expect success I would like to think a great platform if you come here as a Chef I've got to say hand on heart this will give you one of the best platforms as a career in catering in the country.
