The Stag Hampstead to reopen after refurbishment

The Staff Canteen

A long-standing Hampstead pub is set to reopen later this month following a comprehensive refurbishment, with operators promising a refreshed offer that retains the character of a traditional British local.

The Stag, located on Fleet Road in north London, is due to reopen on January 22, after what has been described as a top-to-toe upgrade designed to modernise the space while preserving its original features.

The refurbishment has focused on enhancing both the internal layout and the pub’s outdoor areas, with the intention of broadening its appeal across food, drink, events and sport-led trade.

Original elements including mounted stag heads, ornamental mirrors and open fireplaces have been restored, reinforcing the venue’s identity as a classic pub rather than a full reinvention.

Expanded garden and event-led spaces

One of the most significant changes is to the pub’s expansive garden, which has been upgraded to include a dedicated outdoor bar and screens for major sporting fixtures, including the Six Nations. A new Garden Room has also been introduced, featuring cobblestone flooring, a fireplace and retractable awnings, allowing it to operate year-round.

Upstairs, a full floor has been repurposed as a private events and party space known as Upstairs at The Stag. Designed to feel more like a house party than a formal private dining room, the area is divided into several connected spaces, including a kitchen-style area for food and drink packages, a lounge-style room and an outdoor terrace. The space includes its own beer taps and sound system, with options for DJs and private hire.

Craft beer focus and cocktail development

Behind the bar, the drinks offering has been expanded to place a stronger emphasis on craft beer, with five rotating taps featuring breweries including Pretty Decent Beer, Verdant and Deya. These sit alongside established brands such as Guinness, Asahi and Modelo.

The cocktail list has also been developed, with the introduction of a seasonally changing martini menu featuring seven variations on the classic serve, ranging from traditional styles to more contemporary interpretations.

All-day menus and pub classics

Food remains central to the offer, with all-day menus designed around updated pub classics and sharing dishes. Highlights include rotisserie chicken, a tear-and-share ‘Stag Bag’ inspired by the Irish spice bag, and the venue’s chicken wings, which have developed a strong local following.

Daytime trade has been targeted with a lunchtime toastie menu aimed at walkers and visitors returning from nearby Hampstead Heath. On Sundays, the pub will continue to serve traditional roasts, with premium cuts accompanied by roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy.

The Stag will operate seven days a week, encouraging walk-ins alongside bookings, as it looks to re-establish itself as a neighbourhood pub with broader appeal across food, drink and social occasions.
