Michelin Green star chefs - Darren Broom, Pythouse Kitchen Garden

The Staff Canteen

Tucked away in the rolling Wiltshire countryside, Pythouse Kitchen Garden has become a popular destination for chefs, food lovers and anyone curious about what true sustainability looks like on the plate.

Housed in a converted Victorian potting shed beside a working walled garden, the restaurant has earned both a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a Green Star, recognition for its combination of great value and environmental commitment.

From Devon to fire and forage

At the heart of Pythouse is chef director Darren Broom, whose route into hospitality was anything but ordinary. Originally set on a career in sports psychology, a life-changing accident as a teenager put him on a different path. A chance encounter in a fish and chip shop sparked his interest in cooking, eventually leading him into kitchens under Michael Caines and Marco Pierre White, as well as years spent working as a private chef.

It was during four years running the kitchen of an organic farm in Cornwall that Darren truly found his voice. There, he immersed himself in growing, preserving, fermenting

and curing – skills that now define his cooking at Pythouse.

Cooking with the seasons

Menus here change with the garden. One week it might be Jerusalem artichokes and cavolo nero, the next it’s broad beans and soft herbs freshly picked just outside the kitchen door. Darren champions wild game, heritage vegetables, and rare-breed meats from local farms, often cooking over open fire for flavour and theatre.

Sustainability isn’t just a label – it’s lived. Nothing is wasted, ingredients are preserved for the winter months, and the link between kitchen and garden is constant. As Darren says, “Provenance shouldn’t just be a word on a menu. It has to be visible in the colour, the texture, the aroma, the flavour.”

Recognition with meaning

In a city like Bath or a county like Wiltshire, new openings and polished dining rooms are nothing new – but Pythouse stands out.

Its Bib Gourmand underlines the value-driven approach, while the Green Star confirms the genuine commitment to sustainability. For Darren and the team, those accolades reflect not just what comes out of the kitchen, but how it gets there.

Small Contribution. Big Impact.

We believe in staying open to everyone, but creating this content takes real resources. If you’ve ever found value here—whether it’s a recipe, an interview, or a laugh when you needed it most—consider giving just £3 to keep it going.

A little from you keeps this space free for all. Let’s keep lifting the industry, together.
