Bohemia Chef Reaches Final of Roux Scholarship 2019

Bohemia’s Jr. Sous-Chef Michael Cruickshank has reached the National Finals of the Roux Scholarship 2019, following the regional final held at the University of West London, Ealing.

Michael is proud to be one of the few shortlisted to compete in the finals of one of the world’s most renowned fine dining competitions. Only the best young talent in the UK are chosen to go through to the finals and out of 18 chefs just six were chosen to go through to the final.

The rising chef battled it out against the other contestants to create a main dish, and a dessert which used mystery ingredients given to them on the day, in only 2½ hours.

“Amazing standard. Every year it just gets better and better and the correctness of the cooking and the seasoning was beyond reproach.” said Michael Roux Jr.

The final will be held on 1 April 2019at Westminster Kingsway College, London. The panel of judges will be headed by acclaimed Australian chef, Peter Gilmore alongside joint chairmen Alain and Michel Roux Jr. They will be joined by James Martin, Clare Smyth, Angela Hartnett, Rachel Humphrey, Brian Turner, as well as previous winners Simon Hulstone (2003 scholar), Sat Bains(1999 scholar), and André Garrett (2002 scholar).

For the final, the recipe and ingredients will be a given to the finalists just 30 minutes before the start of the competition. They will create a main dish, either classic or modern, and will be given three hours to prepare and present it to the judges.

Before joining Steve Smith’s team at Bohemia, Michael worked in some of the UK’s most renowned restaurants including Michelin Starred restaurants The Montagu Arms, Hampshire and Sienna Restaurant in Dorchester, Dorset. Only the best young talent in the UK are chosen to go through to the regional finals. Michael was one of the few shortlisted, amongst a high standard of entries, to battle it out in the finals. Michael was selected based on his paper application and his written recipe – which was judged blindly.

Bohemia was also ranked the 14th best restaurant in the whole of the UK in the Good Food Guide 2019 and at number 57 in Square Meal's Top 100 Best Restaurants 2018. Bohemia is the only restaurant in the Channel Islands to be featured in both lists.
